Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Tactics Getting Started with Rainbow Six Tactics
A commander briefing for the 2027 turn-based campaign.
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Tactics asks you to command Rainbow, not to star as the operator on the door. That is the first thing a new player should lock in. You play as Six — Paul Bishop, the Rainbow Six Vegas lead now sitting in the command chair — and you send a squad of four into rooms that still look like Siege: plywood, drywall, drones, and people who will shoot the first silhouette they see.
This beginner guide is for the long wait until 2027. Wishlisting is open. A Closed Test is planned. Full campaign walkthroughs are not. Treat everything here as a briefing, then follow the how to play page when you want the turn-by-turn loop.
What you are actually buying
Ubisoft Paris is building a single-player tactics game, not a seasonal shooter. Press coverage from IGN, Xbox Wire, and GameSpot agrees on the pitch:
- Premium price listed at $49.99.
- No in-game store and no live-service structure.
- Fifteen operators drawn from Rainbow Six Siege.
- Dozens of handcrafted maps (IGN’s briefing cited 47) and about ninety minutes of cinematics.
- Platforms: PC via Steam, Ubisoft Connect, and Epic; PlayStation 5; Xbox Series X|S; plus Ubisoft+, GeForce Now, and Blacknut at launch.
If you want storefront links and the thin Windows 11 requirement line Steam published, use the platforms tool. If you want the story hook — Rainbow collapsing between Siege Year 10 and Year 11, a conspiracy, a name the trailer speaks as Keres — read Paul Bishop / Six.
Your first hour, once you can play
Until a Closed Test or review build exists, this is the loop the trailer and briefings describe. When you finally load in, do this in order.
1. Sit in HQ before you hero-plan a Breach
Rainbow Six Tactics splits time between headquarters and the field. HQ is where you pick the next operation, review intel, train operators, and deal with injuries. Do not skip it. The campaign is built so that a bad roster choice in HQ becomes a failed room later. The HQ and training guide covers the between-mission layer in more depth.
2. Pick four operators, not fifteen
The roster is fifteen. The deploy size is four. That is the whole squad-building problem. You need a way in, a way to see, a way to hold a door, and a way to finish the objective. Ash and Sledge solve walls. Twitch and drones solve intel. Montagne holds space. Doc and Finka keep people standing. Glaz and Nøkk punish overconfidence on the other side of a hole. The squad building guide and the squad planner exist so you do not bring four entry fraggers to a hostage map.
3. Recon before you Breach
GameSpot’s briefing described an opening phase where drones reveal hostiles, hostages, and defensive tools. That phase is the Rainbow Six original sin done right: you are supposed to know something before you blow the hinge. Send the drone. Mark the room. Only then stack on windows, walls, or doors. The Breach guide is the next read after this page.
4. Expect the mission to stop being simultaneous
After the Breach, the game plays more like a modern tactics title. Cover, sightlines, and hit chances matter. Destructible walls still matter — you can open a new angle mid-fight instead of waiting for the next scripted set piece. If an operator goes down, IGN’s interview with the directors discussed permanent loss. Play as if replacements are expensive even if the final rules are not fully public.
What to do this week (no game required)
- Wishlist on Steam or the official store links.
- Create or recover your Ubisoft account so a Closed Test invite has somewhere to land. Details live on the Closed Test page.
- Watch the reveal once as a fan, then once as a commander. Note entry points, drone paths, and who is holding the shield.
- Skim the confirmed operators so the nine revealed names are not a blur.
- Bookmark Updates instead of refreshing rumor threads.
Common beginner mistakes to avoid later
- Treating Tactics like Siege ranked. You are not peeking; you are allocating turns.
- Ignoring drones because the Breach looks louder. Intel is the first turn of the mission.
- Building a squad of only attackers. Hostage and bomb maps will punish a roster with no utility.
- Assuming operators are immortal. Plan around injuries and, if permadeath ships, around empty chairs in HQ.
- Waiting for a 1,000-hour meta. Pre-launch tier lists are reading notes, not gospel. See the roles breakdown.
Where this wiki goes next
After this page, read how to play for the full plan-recon-breach-engage cycle, then mission types so you know why a four-person squad that wins a kill-everything room can still fail a bomb timer. The Gamescom 2026 recap is the source dump if you want every number in one place.
Rainbow Six has not given players a new single-player campaign since Vegas 2 in 2008. Tactics is that campaign with a tactics camera. Learn the camera, learn the four slots, and the rest of the wiki will have somewhere to attach when maps and skill trees are public.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Can I play Rainbow Six Tactics right now?
Not as a full release. The game is scheduled for 2027. Wishlist it and watch the Closed Test page for playtest windows.
Do I play as Ash or as Six?
You command as Six (Paul Bishop). Ash and the other Siege operators are the squad you deploy, not the camera you inhabit.
Is there a tutorial in the campaign?
Ubisoft has not published a mission-by-mission tutorial outline. Expect HQ briefing plus field execution; we will update how to play when a Closed Test shows the onboarding.
Should Siege mains skip this guide?
No. Operator gadgets transfer, but the camera, Breach timing, and four-slot limit are new. Start here, then jump to squad building.
