Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Tactics Permadeath and Ironman Mode
It is a toggle, not the default. Empty chairs still rewrite the next four.
The loudest question after the gamescom 2026 reveal was whether Rainbow Six Tactics would kill your favorite operator for good. IGN sat down with game director Martial Potron and creative director Elie Benhamou and came back with a precise answer: the campaign has optional permadeath and an Ironman mode. It is not forced on every save. It is not a rumor. It is a designed tension you can switch on.
This page is the campaign-risk briefing. The field loop lives in how to play. The between-mission layer lives in HQ and training. Arrests and intel live on non-lethal takedowns. Read those after you understand what “losing someone” actually means here.
What Ubisoft said on the record
Potron told IGN the studio knew permadeath was a must-have for tactics fans. Rainbow Six Tactics ships it as an option you can enable at any difficulty. Operators who are too severely injured can become permanently unavailable for the rest of the campaign. They are not written out with a funeral cutscene in the interview: Potron’s gamescom conversation with IGN described badly injured operators who will not come back for that save. The chair is empty. The skill tree you fed is gone. The four you trusted is now three plus a bench name.
That distinction matters. Players coming from Siege think in rounds and respawns. Players coming from classic XCOM think in gravestones. Tactics sits between them: a 15-person Siege roster, unique kits, and a campaign that can refuse to let you re-buy Ash. Because operators are not blank cadets, Potron said losing a favorite or a highly progressed operator forces you to rethink squad composition. That is the whole point of the squad planner.
Ironman is the second switch. IGN’s article names it alongside optional permadeath. Until a settings screenshot is public, treat Ironman as the save-scum lock: one timeline, no reload after a bad Breach. Pair it with permadeath if you want the full tactics-fan package. Leave both off if you want to learn the camera first. The Closed Test may or may not expose the toggle; the Closed Test page will record what the slice actually offered.
How this changes a four-operator plan
Without the option on, injuries still matter. HQ recovers people. You might sit Doc for a week and take Finka. With the option on, a messy Breach is a strategic event, not a highlight. Two operators “too severely injured” is a campaign fork.
Practical rules when permadeath is on:
- Never send your only space specialist and your only medic through the same un-droned door. Montagne and Doc are expensive chairs.
- Spend recon. A dead drone is cheaper than a dead kit. See how to play.
- Keep a second entry. If Ash is gone, Sledge or Zofia still owes you a hole. The confirmed operators page is the public bench; six names are still hidden on the roster.
- Do not train one sacred four and ignore the rest. Skill trees are per operator. A maxed Glaz who never comes home is a wasted tree.
- Play the next map, not the last highlight. A noisy win that hospitalizes two people is a loss if the following operation is a bomb.
What is still unstated
Ubisoft has not published:
- The exact injury threshold that trips “permanently unavailable.”
- Whether Ironman is a separate checkbox from permadeath or a bundle.
- Whether story-critical operators are protected.
- Whether a later HQ department can ever bring someone back.
- Default setting for new saves.
Until those land in a dev blog, do not invent a percentage. The Updates hub is where a settings screenshot will go. This guide will gain a table, not a guess.
How this wiki will talk about it
Older copy on this site treated permadeath as “discussed.” As of IGN’s 25–28 August 2026 interviews, the accurate line is: optional, available on every difficulty, empty chairs for the rest of that campaign. Pages that still hedge will be updated to point here. If a Closed Test build ships with the toggle missing, that is a slice limitation, not a retcon.
If you only wanted the trailer fantasy, leave the option off. If you wanted Rainbow Six to hurt when a plan fails, turn it on after you can write a Breach sentence without commas. The getting started guide is still the first hour. This page is the reason the first hour should not be your only hour.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Is permadeath on by default?
IGN reported it as optional, including on easier difficulties. Default save settings are not in a public screenshot yet.
Do operators actually die?
Potron described severely injured operators who do not return for the rest of the campaign. Play as if the chair stays empty.
What is Ironman?
Named alongside optional permadeath in IGN's interview. Treat it as a single-timeline lock until Ubisoft shows the menu.
Should Closed Test players enable it?
Only if the slice exposes the toggle and you already understand how to play. A test is for notes, not for griefing your only four.
