Operators

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Tactics Paul Bishop, Six

The Vegas protagonist is the commander, not a deployable operator.

Paul Bishop / Six

You do not play Rainbow Six Tactics as Ash. You play it as Six. In this campaign Six is Paul Bishop, the Rainbow Six Vegas protagonist who has moved from the rope to the chair. That one casting choice is how Ubisoft Paris stitches classic Rainbow to Siege without pretending they were always the same game.

This page is story and role. For the people Bishop sends through walls, use the roster. For the conspiracy the trailer names, stay here and then read the Gamescom 2026 recap.

Why Bishop is in the chair

Rainbow Six Tactics is the first new single-player Rainbow campaign since Vegas 2 in 2008. Putting Bishop in command is a thesis: the series is allowed to remember it used to be about briefings. IGN, Game Informer, and Automaton all report that the story sits in the gap between Siege Year 10 and Year 11, when Rainbow’s operations collapsed. Bishop’s job is to pull the unit back together while a global conspiracy — the trailer uses the name Keres — lights fires faster than you can put them out.

The lore was written with Siege’s narrative team. That matters. Tactics is not a what-if skirmish with borrowed skins. It is a canonical-shaped campaign that has to live next to a live shooter without breaking it. If a cinematic contradicts a Year 10 event, that is a patch note, not a wiki invention.

What “playing as Six” means in gameplay

Bishop is not a fifth operator you sneak into the Breach. He is the camera, the HQ voice, and the person who chooses which four names leave the building. When the trailer says “Six on station,” that is you. When it says former operators have been contacted, that is your squad building screen.

Practical consequences:

  • You will hear Bishop more than you will see him in first person.
  • Your “loadout” is a four-person roster plus whatever HQ departments you funded. See HQ and training.
  • Failure is not a respawn in the same hallway. Failure is an operator who does not come home, especially if permadeath ships as IGN’s interview suggested.

Keres and the fires

The official trailer (on the Rainbow 6 channel and in the IGN upload used on getting started) includes the line about showing Keres that Rainbow is back, plus talk of agency bombings and a larger plan. Do not treat Keres as a fully documented faction yet. Treat it as the named pressure that forces you to pick missions on a world map instead of replaying the same warehouse for fun.

That pressure is why mission types exist in a story game: hostage one week, bomb the next, HVT when intel is finally good enough. Bishop’s character fantasy is triage, not a montage of every fire at once.

How this differs from Siege’s Six

Siege players have heard “Six” as a title that changes hands in lore videos. Tactics is using Bishop specifically, and it is using him as a field commander who is not on the floor. If you wanted a Vegas 3 in first person, this is not that game. If you wanted Vegas’s planning instinct with Siege’s toys, this is the closest Ubisoft has offered in eighteen years.

Reading order for story-minded players

  1. This page, so you stop looking for Bishop in the four-stack.
  2. Getting started for the commander loop.
  3. HQ and training for the between-mission character work.
  4. Release window so you do not expect a 2026 campaign drop.

When a cinematic or artbook names Bishop’s staff, they will get entries under this hub. Until then, the only face you need to remember on the player side is the one that does not enter the room.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is Paul Bishop a playable operator on the map?

No. He is Six, the commander. Operators are the four you deploy from the Siege roster.

Is the Tactics story canon with Siege?

Ubisoft says it sits alongside the Siege timeline, in the Year 10–11 gap, written with Siege's lore team. Treat it as intended canon unless Ubisoft says otherwise.

Who is Keres?

A name spoken in the reveal trailer as the antagonist pressure behind global attacks. No full dossier is public.

Do I need to play Vegas 1 and 2 first?

Helpful for Bishop's face, not required. Tactics explains the chair. Siege knowledge helps more for operator gadgets.
